Decks — Common Questions
Do I need a permit to build a deck in Savannah?
Most decks attached to a house require a building permit in Chatham County and surrounding jurisdictions, and elevated or flood-zone decks get additional scrutiny. GMR builds decks to code and handles the inspection details as part of the job.
Composite or wood decking — which is better here?
Composite costs more up front but shrugs off the Lowcountry’s humidity, sun, and salt air with almost no maintenance, which is why most of our coastal clients choose it. Pressure-treated and hardwood decks cost less and look classic but need regular sealing. We build both well.
Can you build elevated and waterfront decks?
Yes — engineered framing for raised coastal homes, piers, and flood-zone construction is a GMR specialty, including corrosion-resistant hardware rated for salt air.
Do you build screened porches?
Yes — screened porches, covered decks, and outdoor living structures, framed with the same structural discipline as our houses.
